Prospect 2024, Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, June 1 - September 22, 2024
For nearly 40 years, MCASD's Director's Circle has helped shape the Museum's identity through their contributions toward the purchase of art for the permanent collection.
The title Prospect suggests both searching and potential—perhaps, the promise of contemporary art to mark and advance time. These prospects—six pieces —are on view in the Copley and Main West galleries, displayed in dialogue with artworks already in the Museum’s holdings, helping to contextualize how a collection might deepen and expand. The selection reveals both curatorial priorities and directions in current art practice.
While MCASD hopes to acquire all the works, in this process, the decision is made by the members of the Director’s Circle, a support group comprised of the International and Contemporary Collectors. A portion of their annual dues creates the acquisition fund. In turn, the Collectors can vote for their favored work. They will cast their votes at this celebratory Selection Dinner, determining which pieces will be brought into the Museum’s collection.
This committed philanthropic circle experiences contemporary art in a tailored and personalized way. Your contribution provides critical support for the mission, vision, and values of MCASD, our award-winning and diverse education programs, captivating exhibitions, and outreach to the community.
Since 1985, the generous contributions of MCASD’s International and Contemporary Collectors, known as the Director’s Circle, has brought 134 works into the Museum’s collection. Each year a portion of the Director’s Circle donation is allocated to the acquisition fund. MCASD Curators develop a presentation of works entitled Prospect for the Director’s Circle to learn about and vote into the collection through the generosity of their giving.
