February 23 – June 23, 2023
The Bancroft Library Gallery, University of California-Berkeley, CA
The exhibit highlights Bancroft's diverse and extensive map collection, showing the evolution of the printed atlas and cartography from the period of European contact, to contemporary maps displaying cultural, social, and imaginary narratives, to maps that show California as an island. Maps help us understand our own neighborhoods, our broader region, and our global environment. They can be hand-drawn or digitally produced. There is no right way to look at a place in time and, together, these selections will allow us to visualize the familiar through a different lens.
